“What helps me, too, is to recognize that to feel hopeful is not a requirement – you don’t have to be hopeful all the time. It’s perfectly natural to feel hopeless. Hope and hopelessness are just feelings that come and go. Don’t put too much weight on them. Just be glad that you’re alive and can breathe.
And that’s why my work stresses so much at the outset the gift of gratitude, to be grateful for this moment, that you can open your eyes and see the beauty of the world. It’s not so important to be hopeful, but it’s very important to be grateful – grateful to be alive at this moment, grateful for the beauty that is beyond description that surrounds us, grateful for the touch of others, grateful for the beat of our own hearts.”
